Job Description:

 

California Water Service Group, a prominent publicly traded utilities company, is seeking an accomplished and strategic-minded Vice President, Human Resources (VP, HR) to join its executive team. The VP, HR will serve as a key advisor to the Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer, and other officers, providing leadership in all aspects of human capital management to drive the company's mission and values forward.

 

The VP, HR provides executive-level leadership and guidance and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Human Resources (HR) organization including talent acquisition, talent management, succession planning, compliance, organizational development and effectiveness, employee relations, labor management relations, HR systems and processes, compensation and benefits/total rewards, worker's compensation, and generalist functions. In addition, this position plays a critical role as a member of the senior management team that is responsible for strategic planning and execution of the company's business plans.

 

As a member of the Officer Group, the VP, HR plays a crucial role in guiding the company's human capital strategies and ensuring alignment with its mission and values. By providing strategic leadership and direction, the VP, HR contributes to the company's success in attracting, developing, and retaining top talent while fostering a positive and inclusive workplace culture. Additionally, the VP, HR serves as a key liaison with labor groups and regulatory bodies, ensuring compliance with employment laws and regulations while driving continuous improvement initiatives across the organization. This position is located in San Jose, CA.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The VP, HR will have the following primary responsibilities:

 

Strategic Leadership:

 

  • Act as a member of the Officer Group, providing strategic guidance to executive leadership on human capital strategies aligned with the company's business initiatives.

 

  • Consult with the Organization & Compensation Committee and board members on talent and organizational matters, contributing to decision-making processes.

 

Human Capital Strategy:

 

  • Develop and implement comprehensive human capital strategies covering recruitment, retention, leadership development, talent management, performance evaluation, and culture shaping, fostering a cohesive "One Team" approach.

 

  • Lead the design and execution of the Company's Total Rewards Program, ensuring competitiveness in compensation and benefits to attract and retain top talent.

 

Financial Management:

 

  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the Human Resources department, ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and operational needs.

 

Employee Relations:

 

  • Maintain the company culture of positive employee relations. Help ensure that key company policies are adequately communicated.

 

Labor Relations:

 

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for labor management relations, fostering positive relationships and effective communication between management and labor groups.

 

Team Leadership and Development:

 

  • Lead, coach, and empower the Human Resources team to deliver excellence and efficiency in all HR functions, including talent acquisition, leadership development, benefits administration, compensation planning, policy development, employee relations, and HRIS management.

 

Policy and Compliance:

 

  • Establish and document human resource policies, procedures, and documentation to ensure consistency and compliance with laws and regulations.

 

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of employment laws, regulations, and best practices, partnering with Legal to ensure compliance in all HR-related matters.

 

Continuous Improvement:

 

  • Support the Company's Continuous Improvement program and projects, identifying opportunities for enhancing HR processes and practices to drive organizational effectiveness.

 

Other Duties:

 

  • Fulfill additional duties as assigned to meet business operational needs and objectives, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in addressing emerging challenges.

 

EXPERIENCE AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • HR Leadership: Proven track record of successful HR leadership at the executive level, with demonstrated experience in developing and executing HR strategies that drive business results.

 

  • Regulated Industry Experience: Knowledge of the utilities industry or similar regulated industries, with an understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in talent management and HR, preferred.

 

  • Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic planning and problem-solving skills, with the ability to translate business objectives into actionable HR initiatives.

 

  • Employee Relations: Extensive experience in employee relations management, conflict resolution, and fostering a positive work environment built on trust and respect. Prior success serving as the company spokesperson on all matters related to union relations, including labor negotiations, preferred.

 

  • Compliance and Risk Management: Thorough understanding of employment laws, regulations, and compliance requirements, with a focus on minimizing legal risks and ensuring ethical conduct.

 

  • Compensation and Benefits Expertise: Proficiency in designing and administering competitive compensation and benefits programs, with knowledge of industry best practices and trends.

 

  • Talent Development: Track record of implementing effective talent development and succession planning initiatives that support employee growth and career advancement.

 

  • Change Management: Experience leading organizational change initiatives and managing the people aspects of change to drive successful outcomes and employee adoption.

 

EDUCATION:

 

  • Undergraduate Degree in a related field required.

 

  • Advanced degree, Senior Professional in Human Resources (HRCI), or Senior Certified Professional (SHRM), preferred.

 

Salary Range: $200,000 - $400,000
