The Sacramento Suburban Water District is seeking an exceptional Environmental Compliance Supervisor! This position is essential for maintaining the highest standards of water quality adherence with federal, state, and local regulations. This administrative role is responsible for overseeing sampling operations and liaising with outside laboratories, as the District does not have an on-site laboratory. They will also manage the water quality database in WaterTrax, verify that compliance reporting is thorough and accurate, and prepare detailed reports for regulatory agencies, the District’s Board of Directors, and the public. THE JOB / THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Environmental Compliance Supervisor position offers an exciting opportunity to make an impact on the community's water quality and environmental health! This capable Supervisor will oversee a team of four and manage an approximate departmental budget of $400k. They will be responsible for comprehensive oversight of environmental compliance programs, including the collection, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data related to water quality. Additional responsibilities include working closely with external laboratories to ensure proper testing, managing a water quality database (WaterTrax), and preparing detailed reports for regulatory agencies, the Board, and the public. Beyond their technical responsibilities, the Environmental Compliance Supervisor will serve as an essential resource on compliance matters for the District, providing training and guidance to staff across departments, advising executive leadership on requirements and best practices, and ensuring the District remains compliant with evolving legislation and regulations. This Supervisor will champion the District’s values of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement as they empower staff. They will play a pivotal role in strategic planning, focusing on long-term compliance goals and proactive measures to maintain the highest standards of water quality!

The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong technical background in environmental compliance and a deep understanding of water quality regulations and monitoring. Excellent technical writing skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex regulatory requirements are essential. Collaboration is key in this role, as they will be working closely with other departments within the District and external agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Sacramento County Environmental Management Department. The next Supervisor must be willing to obtain necessary certifications, including the D1 (Water Distribution Operator), T2 (Water Treatment Operator), and backflow assembly and cross-connection control within specified timeframes. The District will provide resources and support to help achieve these certifications.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

 

  • Education: Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with

major course work in environmental science, biology, chemistry, physical science

or a related field.

  • Experience: Four (4) years of experience in environmental compliance or a related field,

including two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity.

  • Valid California Driver’s License: Issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles and proof of good driving record as evidenced by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years duration.
    • The driving record will not contribute to an increase in the organization’s automobile insurance rates.
    • Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
  • Certifications:
  • Possession and maintenance of a State of California Water Treatment Operator Certificate Grade T2, or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Possession and maintenance of a Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade D1,

Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate, and Cross Connection Control

Specialist Certificate, or ability to obtain all three certifications within three years of

employment.

(Incumbent must complete the designated number of contact hours (i.e., continuing

education/training requirements) to maintain the required certifications as a condition

of continued employment)

 

 

 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Annual salary of $99,050 – $141,482 DOE/DOQ and an attractive benefits package.
