Job Description:

 

The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Human Machine Interface (HMI) Programmer is responsible for development, modification, and maintenance of PLC control logic used to control, monitor, and alarm water system processes for station pumps and tank controls, pressure and flow controls, and treatment plant controls. The PLC HMI Programmer will be responsible for development of HMI screens at both of the field/control/PLC level and the corresponding control room/supervisory level. This position can be located at any major California office.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Complies with all safety requirements and standards at Cal Water, including wearing the required PPE and adhering to local safety regulations at active job sites
  • Completes all control programming projects (control logic, HMI screens, etc.) accurately and in a timely manner
  • Develops, modifies, and maintains PLC control logic used to control water system processes
  • Develops PLC code in IEC 61131 PLC programming languages including ladder logic, structured text, and function block diagram
  • Develops Visual Basic scripts in a PC based environment for the enterprise wide SCADA system
  • Configures and develops HMI screens in the field and control room
  • Creates lab environment to troubleshoot PLC control systems
  • Provides field support when necessary
  • Develops user interfaces utilizing a standards-based approach on both the enterprise wide SCADA system and field level HMI devices
  • Responsible for alarm management and alarm reporting: develops SCADA system alarms, in a uniform method, to enhance operator situational awareness
  • Trains operations and other technical staff on use of all control and operation systems, as well as associated software applications
  • Designs and delivers reports for submission to various agencies, including CA Department of Public Health (CDPH) and CA Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)
  • Establishes and maintains successful working relationships with consultants, contractors, and vendors
  • Works with multiple software applications using a variety of computer systems or platforms
  • Communicates effectively with all levels of employees and management
  • Participates in and support the Company's Continuous Improvement Process
  • Attends meetings and training as directed by California Water Service
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Associates degree in electronics or similar discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Three years' experience with PLC programming and SCADA system maintenance
  • Three years' experience with Instrumentation and Control systems
  • Familiarity with an enterprise wide SCADA system such as Wonderware, ClearSCADA, FactoryTalk SE, etc.
  • Familiarity with PLC programming software such as Unity, RSLogix, Mchine Edition, etc
  • Familiarity with operator interface panels from Maple Systems, Red Lion, Schneider Electric, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with Data reporting tools and query languages such as SQL and OSIsoft PI
  • Troubleshoots 984 style ladder logic programming languages such as Telepace or NXT
  • Knowledge of SCADA communication protocols including Modbus and DNP3
  • Knowledge of radio and network communication systems
  • Strong understanding of water system operations and regulatory requirements
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in a diverse environment with minimal supervision
  • Valid California Driver License

 

Salary Range: $80,600 - $149,900
