The Utilities Engineer Oversees the planning, design, and inspection of engineering projects related to the water, wastewater, and stormwater utility for the City. Performs related assignments as required. Reports to the Director of Utilities. The work is performed primarily as leader or director with broad functional areas and more expertise and strategic focus.

The preferred hiring amount for this position is between $102,497.24 - $128,392.84 Annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity.   • The City of Charlottesville manages its own retirement system and does not participate in VRS, however the City has a Portability Agreement with VRS and there are certain provisions that must be met. Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a 4-year degree,
  • Five (5) years of professional engineering work experience.
  • Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate.
  • Requires a PE license or the ability to obtain a PE within 12 months of hire.
  • General knowledge of modern principles and practices of civil engineering; general knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction and maintenance of public works or utility projects; general knowledge of land and engineering survey systems, methods and techniques; general knowledge of contract administration principles; general knowledge of microcomputers and their applications;

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
