Description

The City of Beaverton's Water Operations Department is rapidly growing due to an expanding system and increased development occurring throughout Beaverton. To meet these needs, the city is hiring Water Distribution Technicians and Operators. The Public Works Department is a diverse workplace that encourages collaboration, creativity and innovation in solving problems while at the same time exercising sound professional judgment. The classification title for Water Technician and Water Distribution Operator is Water Distribution Technician and Water Distribution Equipment Operator. Applicants applying for these two positions will be considered for both, depending on qualifications.

This is a DOT-covered position. Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug screens/breath alcohol tests in accordance with DOT guidelines.

Responsibilities

The Water Distribution Technician can expect to:

  • Maintain, repair, disinfect and replace main and service distribution lines.
  • Perform system flushing, exercise valves, and maintain/repair or replace hydrants.
  • Take special water samples and deliver to the lab.
  • Maintain records and maps as required by state and federal regulations.
  • Operate heavy equipment.
  • Replace meters, meter boxes, verify pressure, develop and initiate leak detection strategies, operate correlation equipment.
  • Set up safe work zones including traffic controls, shoring and confined space entry.
  • Have the ability to perform critical infrastructure assessment and document using asset management system for future system master planning.
  • Repair concrete curbs, sidewalks, driveways and landscapes after utility repairs.
  • Provide excellence in internal and external customer service.
  • Support and respect diversity in the workplace.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Water Distribution Operator can expect to:
  • Operate equipment including vactor, loaders, backhoe, ten-yard dump trucks, street cutting saw, jack hammer and trenching machine and other equipment as assigned. Inspect all equipment, attachments and tools for safety. Ensure job site utilities have been located prior to beginning work.
  • Serve as crew leader at work sites. Provide leadership to crew and resolve site issues in absence of crew lead. Organize site approach. Maintain safe handling of area.
  • Inspect installations and communicate with city engineering, planning, and project lead.
  • Oversee and/or set up traffic control for work crew sites. Perform flagging functions.
  • Perform operation and repair maintenance on a variety of water distribution devices and lines. Maintain and monitor reservoirs including adjusting chlorine residuals. Investigate system problems throughout pressure zones. Monitor and diagnose water distribution systems using telemetry equipment and programs.
  • Remove, repair and replace meters, hydrants, valves pressure reducing valves and other devices.
  • Complete proper paperwork. Track and document materials usage.
  • Assist in notifying citizens of scheduled projects.
  • Respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Provide excellence in internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for customers through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution. Focus on producing high quality results.
  • Support and respect diversity in the workplace.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate

Minimum Qualifications for Water Technician:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years of experience in water distribution systems operations and maintenance.
  • Commercial Driver's License A with air brake endorsement– Required within six months of hire.
    • Positions in this classification are required to possess a valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards.
  • Flagger training within three months of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six months of employment.
  • Oregon Health Division Water Distribution Operator Certificate I required within one year of date of hire.
  • Ability to pass reference check, background check, physical, and drug screen.

Minimum Qualifications for Water Distribution Operator:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Four years of experience in water distribution systems, including one year experience using heavy equipment in this field, and experience operating telemetry equipment.
  • Commercial Driver's License A with air brake endorsement– Required within six months of hire.
    • Positions in this classification are required to possess a valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards.
  • Flagger training within three months of employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six months of employment.
  • Oregon Health Division Water Distribution Operator Certificate I.
  • Ability to pass reference check, background check, physical and drug screen.

Compensation

Salary Range: 
$3,810.96-$5,106.09 monthly (Water Distribution Operator is a non-exempt position)
$3,552.85-$4,760.44 monthly (Water Technician is a non-exempt position)

Starting salary will be determined depending on relevant work experience. The city pays the full retirement contribution to PERS; provides employees with an opportunity to participate in a deferred compensation retirement plan; and offers excellent health, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. The city also has available a tuition reimbursement program and a public service loan forgiveness program.
