Summary Cumberland County seeks a Solid Waste Management Director to lead the Department, which provides for efficient use of a sanitary landfill to further the County's efforts in developing solid waste disposal-resource recovery system. The program conserves natural resources, reduces the volume of non-recoverable waste and disposes of nearly 3.4 million tons of waste. The Solid Waste Management Director possesses outstanding leadership skills to identify, hire and promote talent, evaluate and create standards of performance with stakeholder input, hold all staff accountable for excellence.The Solid Waste Management Director oversees a department with 68 employees, and an enterprise fund budget of $17,375,600 supported by numerous user charges. The Solid Waste Management administration division provides for all managerial and administrative duties for all sections/units of this department (Transportation, 17 Container Sites, Ann Street Landfill, Construction & Demolition landfill, Household Hazardous Waste/Planning, Maintenance, Recycling, White Goods, Wilkes Road Treatment & Processing Facility, and Scale House) to include budget, purchase orders, requisitions, personnel, accounts receivable and payable, scale house operations, training, supply inventory, etc.Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree in environmental management or a related field; supplemented by five years experience that includes supervising staff and managing solid waste collection and disposal programs; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. SWANA certification or ability to obtain within a year required. The selected candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
