THE POSITION: Under general direction, plans, schedules, assigns, and reviews the work of wastewater collection and reclamation systems maintenance staff within the Public Works Department; supervises, plans, and coordinates the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of Town wastewater collection and reclaimed water delivery systems, facilities, and related appurtenances; administers, monitors, and provides technical input for assigned maintenance, operations, and related projects and programs; provides responsible technical assistance to the Utility Systems Superintendent; performs a variety of technical and "hands-on" tasks relative to the assigned functional area; and performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is the first line supervisory-level class in the utility maintenance class series.  Responsibilities include planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of utility maintenance staff either directly or through lead workers.  Incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of utility operations and maintenance duties as assigned.  Performance of the work requires the knowledge and skills pertaining to the operations and maintenance of the Town's wastewater collection and reclaimed water delivery systems; incumbents must exercise independence, good judgment and initiative within established guidelines.  This class is distinguished from the Utility Systems Superintendent in that the latter has overall responsibility for all water, wastewater and recycled water utility operations and maintenance functions, as well as implementing and interpreting department policy.  This class is expected to perform field work alongside his/her workers and respond to emergencies and call outs.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and four (4) years of experience in operation, construction, maintenance, and/or repair of water systems, facilities, and related appurtenances.

Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's License by time of appointment.
Possession of a Grade III Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Possession of a Grade II Water Treatment Operator Certificate issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
Depending on assignment, may require Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate.
