The City of Lomita is now accepting applications for the position of Water Service Technician I.  Under close supervision of the Field Operations Manager, the ideal candidate will effectively perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of the City’s water treatment plan and distribution system.

Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the City’s water system, including underground water mains, water service lines, and hydrants.  Assist with repair of leaks in service assemblies; report defects and irregularities to higher level Water Service Technicians.
Read water meters, turn water services on and off as needed; install, replace, repair, and inspect residential and commercial water meters; calibrate meters to departmental standards.  Read and record data at pumping station, treatment plant and well gauges; compute water consumption.  Assist with monitoring water quality by taking routine water samples for testing. Perform general maintenance of system facilities, including but not limited to painting pumps and appurtenances and cleaning equipment.
Operate basic equipment, including power and hand tools; perform preventative maintenance and light repairs on equipment; drive pick-up truck to various City facilities and other locations to transport supplies. Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed; attend safety training sessions; respond to emergency calls during work and after normal working hours.
Assist in the set-up of traffic control including barricades, cones, and other necessary delineation prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities.  May assist the Streets and Trees Division with street and tree maintenance as required.
A high school diploma or equivalent, AND one (1) year of experience working for a municipal water utility is desirable.

Must have and maintain a valid California State Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Certificate (WDC) Grade D1, and a valid Class C California Driver's License.
New PERS Members (hired after January 1, 2013) or returning members with a break in service greater than 6 months will be enrolled in the City’s 2% @ 62 Defined Benefit Pension Plan. Employee contributes the employee portion (CalPERS will change this rate annually).
Classic PERS Members (entering before January 1, 2013 and enrolled in the CalPERS system within the past 6 months) will be enrolled in the City’s 2% @ 60 Defined Benefit Pension Plan.  Employee pays the 7% employee contribution.
The City does not participate in social security.
Long-Term Disability, Short-Term Disability, and Life Insurance Plans paid for by the City
City contributes between $1,000 and $1,085 per month towards health, dental, and vision insurance, depending on the number of dependents enrolled.
Fifty percent (50%) of any remaining money may be deposited into an ICMA-RC 457 deferred compensation account.
VACATION: 80 hours per year for first 5 years of service
SICK LEAVE: 108 hours per year
HOLIDAYS: 14.5 days per year (which includes the week between Christmas and New Year’s) plus one personal holiday per year
The City works a 9/80 schedule with alternating Fridays off.  This position is part of the on-call rotation and may occasionally respond to after-hours and weekend/ holiday emergency call-outs.
