Description

The City of San Diego is currently recruiting for the Director of the Public Utilities Department.  Under the general direction of a Deputy Chief Operating Officer, the Director leads the Public Utilities Department comprising of over 1,600 employees that provide water, wastewater, and recycled water services to the City of San Diego and other communities.  The system is one of the largest and most complex systems in the world due to the size of the service area, topography, and varied climate.

Key Areas of Responsibilities:
Representing the department at City Council and Council Committee meetings and various civic, community, professional, and business forums;

Participating in negotiations with a variety of water and wastewater agencies and working closely with elected officials, community leaders, and representatives from those agencies;

Participating in negotiations with regulatory agencies and directing department operations to ensure compliance with all permits and regulatory requirements;

Directing the department's fiscal/budget activities, including the preparation and administration of capital and operating budgets;

Bringing to bear substantial, progressively responsible management experience needed to direct a major operating department;

Leading efforts to proactively identify and support creative and viable business solutions for efficient utility operations;

Providing focused leadership for enhanced customer service and customer satisfaction;

Managing diversity in the workplace and encouraging high performing teams;

Performing related duties as assigned.
