Our Bureau of Development Services is seeking a Site Development Inspector I to inspect and evaluate properties for compliance with Oregon State On-Site Sewage Disposal (septic system) rules and local regulations for grading, erosion control and site development. In this role, you will:
-- Evaluate soil properties and geological features of proposed development sites for the suitability of on-site septic systems.
-- Assist in the review of plans and permit applications for new septic systems and repairs to existing systems.
-- Inspect septic system installations to ensure that materials and workmanship conform to requirements.
-- Review plans and inspect development sites for conformance with state and local laws related to grading, erosion and sediment control, private street construction and other site-related development.

As a Site Development Inspector I, you will also meet the Bureau's expectations of providing excellent customer service in an equitable manner to meet the growing needs of the City of Portland's diverse community. The resulting eligible list from this recruitment will be used to fill the current and future vacancies.

The Site Development Inspector I will be expected to participate in a professional development program to obtain Oregon registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or Waste Water Specialist.  This classification is represented by the District Council of Trade Unions (DCTU). To Qualify:
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
-- Knowledge of soil science, soil qualities related to drainage, geology, hydrology, geomorphology, biology and/or environmental engineering.
-- Knowledge of the provision of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) On-Site Sewage Disposal rules, using the general principles of geo-morphology, hydrology and soil science; and the practices, materials, and tools used in making subsurface sewage disposal installations.
-- Knowledge of erosion control practices as they relate to the breaking of ground at construction sites, natural resources conservation, and storm water management.
-- Ability to read and interpret maps, engineering and architectural drawings, specifications and sewage disposal rules and apply them to specific installations; and prepare reports, write letters, and input and retrieve information using computer software.
-- Ability to exercise judgment in determining alternative solutions that will lead to compliance; work under limited supervision; and exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with co-workers and the public.
-- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing with contractors, builders and the public including explaining technical information and requirements; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diversity of others.
