THE POSITION: The Utility and Maintenance Technician I & II are the first two levels of a four level Utility and Maintenance Technician series. Incumbents are responsible for operating trucks, equipment and tools, performing a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance of the District's water distribution mains, service lines and related appurtenances used to supply potable and recycled water.
EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT & ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Include but are not limited to:
Exercise and perform basic maintenance on valves, blow-offs, fire hydrants, air vacs, sample stations, water meters, and other water appurtenances.
Assist in responding to emergencies as required during normal working hours, weekends, nights and holidays.
Perform installation and repair on water services, water mains, fire hydrants, fire services and other related water appurtenances.
Responds to customer complaints and checks system for cause of complaints.
Operates tools and equipment as assigned by crew lead or supervisor for performing utility maintenance repair activities.
Observes and follows established safety precautions regarding traffic control, confined space, trenching, excavating, and power equipment operation.
Read and troubleshoot automated meters using drive-by technology.
Flush, monitor, and maintain water quality in existing dead end lines.
Locating and marking utility lines/services.
Remove and replace concrete and asphalt as required when performing utility maintenance.
Requires working in a strenuous environment with heavy lifting.
Applicants must have KNOWLEDGE OF: customer service principles; basic record keeping techniques; applicable maintenance practices related to concrete, asphalt, signage, traffic control, water utilities; a variety of heavy equipment and tools, and follow safe work practices. Applicants must have ABILITY TO: Operate a variety of tools and equipment; operate light and heavy vehicles; perform manual labor; troubleshoot equipment problems; maintain, repair and clean equipment and trucks; complete paperwork and documentation; provide customer service; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work as well as coworkers and supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING PHYSICAL SKILLS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, push, pull, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations, availability for shift work, on-call, stand-by, and emergency call.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE:
I - One (1) year of construction, operation and/or maintenance related experience.
II - Two (2) years of experience at water maintenance technician level I or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
In addition, both levels require a high school diploma or G.E.D.
I - Valid Class "C" California Driver's License and safe driving record
Successful completion of safe driving, and CPR and First Aid courses within six months of hire
II - State of California Department of Health Water Distribution Grade D-I certificate and/or State of California Department of Health Treatment Operator Grade T-1
ADDITIONAL CERTS/LICENSES DESIRED:
Completion of traffic control and flagging class, certification for Confined Space entry, Class "A" driver's license is desirable (Class "A" California Commercial Driver's License is a requirement to take stand-by duty) D-2 and/or T-2 Certifications are highly desirable.

The Utility and Maintenance Technician is part of a multi-level classification. Placement will be made at Level I ($19.93-$25.44/hr) or Level II ($20.73-$27.79/hr) with the ability to advance to Level III ($22.48-$30.13/hr) and Level IV ($24.22-$32.46/hr)
